On October 7, 1949, the German Democratic Republic was founded on the territory of the former Soviet Zone.
The previously existing main administration for post and telecommunications of the German Economic Commission for the Soviet occupation zone was transformed into the ministry for post and telecommunications. Deutsche Post was subordinate to this ministry.
The postage stamps of the Soviet occupation zone were initially still valid on the territory of the GDR. By the end of 1952, the organization of a uniform post and telecommunications traffic took place through the individual upper post offices.
The stamps were valid until October 2nd, 1990 and December 31st, 1991
